In today’s meeting, we discussed the importance of Linked In and how to jump into the virtual-resume, social networking site. If you were there for our Linked In workshop, a few things you can do to dive further into Linked In are:
- Complete Your Profile – Finish building your Linked In profile, until on your home page, it says “100% complete.” The blue bar indicating your profile completeness will have “tips” underneath it to help you finish your virtual resume.
- Join Groups – Check out the groups affiliated with UNT, PRSSA and organizations you intern/ed with or want to work for. Be careful not to join groups that are for “staff” or employees, as they won’t be helpful to you and it will be strange to see a request from a non-employee or member.
- Ask for Help – Linked In is your online resume and should be treated as such. If you need help networking, using Linked In to your advantage or completing your experience, don’t be afraid to ask an officer of PRSSA for help. We would be happy to look over your Linked In profile and check for errors.
If you missed the meeting, a few things you can do to catch up:
- Set Up Your Linked In: Set up an account on Linked In. PRSSA President Neli has some great packets to get you started on Linked In. You can find some information online to get you started as well.
- Google Yourself: Be sure your “online persona” reflects your “real-life” one. If your dated MySpace or a photo of you playing beer-pong is the first thing that comes up, you can be sure it’s hurting your job search or professional reputation.
This semester will be full of opportunities to build both your professional acumen and your resume and we’re really excited to be a part of it. Keep building those profiles and don’t be afraid to ask for help!
